Describe a meaningful family tradition unique to your culture and explain how it mirrors or contrasts with the cultural identity themes of expectations and roles in “girl” by Jamaica Kincaid.

Prompt response : A meaningful tradition in my culture is the quinceañera. When a girl turns fifteen, her family throws a big celebration to show she’s becoming a young woman. It usually involves a church ceremony, a fancy dress, and a big party with music and dancing. This connects to “girl” by Jamaica Kincaid because both show how girls are expected to act a certain way. Summary : In “girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, a mother tells her daughter what she can and can not do to be a “proper” woman. She talks about cooking, cleaning, and acting respectfully   The story shows pressure on girls to follow certain rules. Reflection : The story made me realize the expectations girl face in many cultures. Even if the rules aren’t as strict now, there are still ideas about how we should look and act. It reminded me that while traditions can be important they can also feel unfair, especially to girls.

Reflect on how your cultural heritage shapes your daily expectations, inspired by “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid.

prompt response : I’ve also grown up with certain expectations. I’m expected to respect my elders, greet everyone, and certain chores due to my gender. summary : “Girl” by Jamacia Kincaid is a story where a mother gives a long list of advice to her daughter. The mother tell s her how to act, how to do chores, and how to behave do others see her as a “proper” girl. reflection : as a hispanic girl, I relate to “Girl” because I also grew up with a lot of advice from my family. I was taught to be respectful, help at home , and act properly.
